You can find Urban Park Rangers at Ranger Stations and Nature Centers in all the parks of NYC.  Rangers facilitate free hikes, campouts, canoe outings, fishing outings, bird tours, and workshops that enhance your outdoor skills – all offered in your neighborhood and across the city.  You can also sign up to receive their free Outdoors in NYC newsletter to keep up-to-date.

Family Camping

Families can join the Urban Park Rangers for a free camping experience at any of the listed parks within the five boroughs. We start with a cookout, then a variety of evening activities, such as stargazing and night hikes. You can sleep under the stars and awake to the birds. Everything is included but you must RSVP at their website.

Propect Park

The Green-Wood Cemetery

This cemetery was one of the leading tourist attraction by the 1850’s, attracting 500,000 visitors per year. From 1850 to 1900, no American cemetery interrered more political leaders than Green-Wood. Buried here are Civil War generals, murder victims, victims of mass tragedies, inventors, and artists. The cemetery also features beautiful grounds, scupture, architecture, and bird watching. Free on your own.

Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge

This is the largest bird sanctuary (more than 325 bird species can be found) in the Northeastern United States and the best place in New York City to observe migrating birds. Encompassing 9,155 acres, the refuge’s diverse habitats include salt marsh, upland field and woods, several fresh and brackish water ponds and an open expanse of bay. Come if you enjoy bird-watching, hiking, fishing and interpretive tours.
