New York, NY, USA – June 1, 2009 – Freeinnyc.net — Yes it’s possible to have a fantastic summer in the city and not spend a dime! From activities with your kids to a romantic day for two, you must take advantage of thousands of completely free offerings in NYC (especially in this economy).

First of all, thank you NYCgovparks.org! Everyday there are numerous free workshops and tours in all of our city’s parks sponsored by our City government. Bird-watching, discovering horticulture, or educational tours of our parks just name a few of the free offerings.

The Downtown Boathouse offers free walk-up public kayaking, guided 3-hour kayak trips on the Hudson River and lower harbor, and introductory kayak evening classes. All you have to do is know how to swim and bring a bathing suit/shorts and a t-shirt. In addition, check out the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club for free canoeing.

The Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation offers Movies with a View free every Thursday night in July & August at the Empire-Fulton Ferry
State Park. There are DJs to spin music and short films before each feature film, food, and free bike valet service. And the films and free popcorn at River Flicks at Hudson River Park on Wednesdays and Fridays are a definite must.

The Metropolitan Opera and the NY Philharmonic both offer free concerts in many of our city’s parks. It’s especially interesting in such an informal and outdoor setting. Lincoln Center Out of Doors offers over 100 free
performances this August 5-23 in the plazas of Lincoln Center.

If you want free concerts see Brooklyn Academy of Music Rhythm & Blues Festival, Celebrate Brooklyn! (TV on the Radio and Bonnie Rait), Clinton Concert Series, Free for All at the Midtown Town Hall, Martin Luther King
Jr. Concert Series (Lauryn Hill and Boyz II Men performed last year), and Seaport Music Festival (Superchunk and Polvo). ABC at Central Park and NBC at Rockefeller Center present live for TV musical performances at 7am.

Of course everyone knows Shakespeare in the Park (June 10-July 12), Central Park’s SummerStage, and the Museum Mile Festival (June 9). Don’t forget that most of the city’s museums offer at least one free or pay-what-you-wish night a month all year round.

Check out each venue’s website for details.  Enjoy!
