There is beautiful (or at least noteworthy) architecture all over NYC. Here is a list of our must-sees and they are free to look at and in many cases free to visit.

    This is an unexpected fortress/castle in the middle of mundane midtown.
  • The Church of the Transfiguration (One E 29th St btwn Fifth and Madison Aves)

  • Central Synagogue (652 Lexington Ave at 55th St)
    Free docent–led tours at 12:45pm every Friday.
  • Chrysler Building (Lexington Ave at 42nd St)
  • Citigroup Center (53rd St and Lexington Ave)
  • City Hall (260 Broadway)
    Free weekday tours but must RSVP.
  • Emmett Building (95 Madison Ave)
  • Hearst Magazine Building (300 W57th St at 8th Ave)
  • Lipstick Building (885 Third Ave at 53rd St)
  • Empire State Building (5th Ave at 34th St)
  • Gracie Mansion (East End Avenue at 88th Street)
    Admission for children and students are free.
  • Grand Central Terminal (42nd St at Lexington Ave)

  • The Helmsley (230 Park Ave btwn 45th and 46 Streets)
  • Lever House (390 Park Ave btwn 53rd and 54th Sts)
  • The Little Church Around the Corner (One E 29th St
    btwn 5th and Madison Aves)
  • Manhattan Municipal Building (1 Centre St at the intersection of Chambers and Centre Sts)
  • NY Public Library (455 5th Ave New York NY 10016)
    Free tours every day at 11am and 2pm.
  • The Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in New York (233 Madison Ave New York NY 10016)
  • Post Office (Eighth Ave (bwtn W 31 & W 32 Sts)
  • Riverside Church (490 Riverside Drive)
    Free one hour Sunday tours begin in the First Balcony at approximately 12:15pm. These tours include a brief history of the church, a summary of its programs, and visits to Christ Chapel, Gethsemane Chapel, the Nave and the Chancel. The organ console is usually included as well.
  • Rockefeller Center (5th Ave and 50th St)
    Art deco detailing.
  • Seagram Building (375 Park Ave at 53rd Street)
  • Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (1071 5th Ave at 88th St)
  • St. Bartholomew’s Church (Park Ave at 51st St)
    Tour the spectacular sacred space of St. Bartholomew’s every Sunday at 12:15 pm.
  • St. John the Divine (112th St at Amsterdam Ave) and Children’s Sculpture Park
  • St. Patricks Cathedral (460 Madison Ave at 50th St)
  • Time Warner Center – Shop (59th & Columbus)
    Large open space, beautiful views of Columbus Circle, fantastic art.
  • Tweed Courthouse (52 Chambers St btwn Broadway and Centre St)

  • Ukrainian Institute of America (2 East 79th St)
  • Woolworth Building (233 Broadway btwn Park Pl and Barclay St)

Unexpected gems

  • 40 W 40th St (south side of Bryant Park), 2nd Ave – check out the gargoyles.
  • 107 E 70th St New York NY 10021
  • 232 Madison Avenue
  • 45 E 66th St (NE corner at Madison Ave)
  • 47 – 50 Sts on Lexington Ave
    There are beautiful small details on the buildings of the W and Marriott Hotels and other buildings on the East side of the street.
  • 119 W 40th St (btwn Broadway & Avenue of The Americas New York NY 10018
    Gorgeous life-size portrait scultures.
